Among my biggest achievements was running the business desk of Bermuda’s daily national newspaper, The Royal Gazette. In my role as Deputy Business Editor I built contacts, sourced, researched and wrote stories with pictures and then laid them out on the page and edited them. I also had to check other people’s work for grammar and accuracy. During my time there, I helped to increase the paper’s circulation to more than 16,000 and its daily online readership to more than 200,000.
Added to that, I broke several exclusive stories and launched new employment, motoring and technology sections in the paper. I also launched The Top 10 Employers in Bermuda in sister publication The Bottom Line magazine, an annual awards ceremony and feature recognising the best employers in Bermuda. All of these new ventures brought in significant new revenue to the business.
Breadth of experience
My time on local and national newspapers has given me a sharp news sense, enabling me to quickly identify an angle for a story and follow up on it, presenting it in a clear and easy to understand format.
Working on magazines and websites has also enabled me to develop my own unique writing style and specialise in complex subjects such as insurance and financial services.
My extensive contacts list has also given me almost unparalleled access to some of the world’s top CEOs and senior managers, including at HSBC, ACE, AIG and XL Catlin, whom I have collaborated with on numerous writing assignments.
